Experienced Democracy
At SZU in the third district of Vienna, democracy is not only taught as a political concept — it is experienced, discussed and practised as an essential part of school life. We place great emphasis on preparing young people to become active, informed and responsible citizens. Our students regularly take part in class decision-making, school elections and democracy-related initiatives and events. Critical thinking and engagement with the challenges we face as a society are also an integral part of the curriculum.
Participation and Motivation
Through workshops, simulations and panel discussions, SZU students engage with topics such as the European Union, global citizenship, sustainability, the green transition, autocracy, fake news, AI and the role of young voices in shaping Europe’s future. Class representatives and other students are encouraged to act as multipliers within the school community, sharing information, raising awareness and motivating others to participate.
Multiple Perspectives
As a school centre in a major European capital that combines technical-vocational and commercial school types under one roof, and that is set up to accommodate a large proportion of students with special educational needs, SZU brings together young people with different perspectives, talents and backgrounds. This diversity enriches discussions and creates a valuable space for dialogue, cooperation and shared learning. Students are encouraged to listen to one another, question information, express their views respectfully and work together on ideas for a democratic future.
